Interview with Alexander N: Redefining Indie Cinema with ‘Romea&Juliet’

For several months now, we’ve been watching with interest a curious figure in the Indie film firmament, Alexander N, the inquisitive General Producer of an independent California-based film company N Films. Alexander N is actually not new to the scene and has been working in the Hollywood milieu for over a decade.

His new venture, the feature film ‘Romea&Juliet’, has caught the attention of film industry professionals and average audiences with its bold approach, vibrant story, and unusual handling of production and promotion, generating excitement in the indie film community.

We contacted Alexander N to discuss the upcoming project, his unique vision, and where he draws inspiration for such a complex project.

The film tells the story of Romea, a black classical ballerina from Billionaires’ Row, who meets white rapper Juliet from the streets of Harlem.

IW: ‘Romea&Juliet’ is a bold and ambitious project that takes a fresh look at a familiar story. We can imagine what will be similar. Yet, what will be different from the original story?

Alexander N: I bet, you can’t imagine what will be similar. And what will be different? I’d say, the theme of Romeo and Juliet is merely a symbol of how different, contradictory, and incompatible the lives of humans can be. And what they are willing to do to overcome all obstacles.

IW: So, how did you go about adapting the centuries-old story to the contemporary setting?

Alexander N: There’s no such thing as a “contemporary” setting. The themes of love, loss, and social injustice that resonate throughout Shakespeare’s works are timeless. They’re just as relevant today as they were hundreds of years ago.

IW: What are some of the new ways that you’re approaching the story?

Alexander N: I’m sure it’s important for art to reflect the world around us. ‘Romea&Juliet’ is a platform to raise awareness of important social issues like income inequality, intolerance of race, beliefs, and religion. The film was invented to inspire audiences to think critically about the world around them and to take action to make it a better place.

IW: That’s a bold statement. Do you believe you can change the world with ‘Romea&Juliet’?

Alexander N: Not just me, but our entire movie company, N Films, does! It’s going to take all of us working together to make a difference. We are constantly in communication with partners, brilliant minds of our time, and film enterprises to work together in fixing the world with the tool we have: cinema.

IW: ‘Romea&Juliet’ is a challenging film to make, both artistically and financially. What were some of the biggest obstacles you faced in bringing the project to life?

Alexander N: Organizational. ‘Romea&Juliet’ is a collective creative effort. The most authentic New Yorkers will collectively write the story, talented fashion designers will make the costumes, street dancers will choreograph the stage, and spoken word artists will deliver the narrative.

IW: Finances?

Alexander N: We have the production budget secured. However, our partnering fund has a policy of not financing pre-production. Yet, we have options with that as well. So, it’s a matter of negotiations and tight work with co-production partners.

IW: What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers who are hoping to make their mark in the independent film scene?

Alexander N: Your life plans should come from your childhood. Never give up on what you used to call “dreams”. The film industry is maybe filled with challenges and setbacks. But it’s you! The one who takes challenges. Go for it, I’ll be there to support you.

IW: Thank you, Alexander. Excited to see what you do next.

Alexander N: Cheers!

As the interview concluded, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air for the future of indie cinema – the very field where everything is possible.
