Djimon Hounsou Sets Mask Off Documentary

Internationally acclaimed actor Djimon Hounsou is moving forward with Mask Off, a new feature documentary now entering development with an international production and platform strategy.

The project is being developed in association with Fanaticus Media Group (FMG), Hounsou’s production company, alongside Sourou Prod, Skwallizer Films, Bon Chic Prod and Focused Artists Management, the Los Angeles based company led by producer Fabrice Sopoglian, whose credits include The VIF: Christian Audigier and American Badass: A Michael Madsen Retrospective.

Mask Off will explore Hounsou’s extraordinary journey from his early life in Africa, through homelessness in France, to his breakthrough in Hollywood and rise to international stardom. His early Hollywood trajectory was notably shaped by Steven Spielberg, opening the door to a career spanning some of the most significant productions in contemporary cinema.

A two time Academy Award nominee, Hounsou has appeared in major films including Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio, Amistad, Gladiator and In America, among many others.

At its heart, Mask Off is an intimate exploration of identity, survival, spirituality and the mysterious forces connecting Hounsou’s African roots to his extraordinary journey. The film will look beyond the Hollywood star to the people, places and experiences that shaped him.

The production is being envisioned on an international scale, with filming planned across three major territories: Africa, France and Hollywood, creating a cinematic bridge between Hounsou’s origins, his formative years in France and the Hollywood world where he built his career.

The documentary is expected to feature a selection of major A-list names from Hounsou’s career and Hollywood circle, adding a significant international dimension as the producers prepare the project for global buyers and streaming platforms.

The project is being overseen by Gael Hounsou, Skwall, David Mbappé and Fabrice Sopoglian, who are currently assembling the development package, production strategy and international partnerships.

The producers are also considering a potential screening or industry presentation during the 2027 Cannes Film Festival, as the project moves toward its international rollout.
Mask Off is currently in development, with international platform conversations expected to begin as the project advances.
