Cannes 2025 Opens with Diverse, Daring Lineup

The 77th Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, May 13, with a powerful mix of debut features, bold auteurs, and major premieres. Amélie Bonnin opens Out of Competition with her first film Partir un jour, while Wes Anderson returns with The Phoenician Scheme.

In Competition, highlights include Ari Aster’s Eddington, Julia Ducournau’s anticipated Alpha, and Nouvelle Vague from Richard Linklater. Other standouts: Resurrection by Bi Gan, Les Aigles de la République by Tarik Saleh, and Die My Love by Lynne Ramsay. Jafar Panahi, Saeed Roustaee, and Kelly Reichardt also feature.

Un Certain Regard presents a rich blend of fresh voices: Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water, Harris Dickinson’s Urchin, and Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great. First-time directors make a strong showing, including Zuzana Kirchnerova, Charlie Polinger, and Morad Mostafa.

Out of Competition slots include Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, Cédric Klapisch’s Colours of Time, and the blockbuster Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Midnight Screenings will feature Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! and Le Roi Soleil by Vincent Maël Cardona.

With an eclectic lineup that spans continents, genres, and generations, Cannes 2025 promises a vibrant celebration of global cinema.
