Meet the Low-Budget Movie Producer/Director From India – Athreya Ram

Athreya Ram is an independent filmmaker in California. He is 25 years old and originally from India. He moved to Los Angeles in 2016, when he was 18 years old. He has been working in this industry since he was 14, back in 2013.

My name is Athreya Ram and I’m an independent filmmaker in California. I’m 25 years old and originally from India. I moved to Los Angeles in 2016, when I was 18 years old. I have been working in this industry since I was 14, back in 2013. I’ve worked on short films and music videos for the most part, until I produced a feature film in 2021.

My thesis short film named “Torn Plaid” is completed and is currently under film festival run, whereas the feature film named “Blue Wilderness” (shot during the pandemic) that I produced is going through the final stages of post production.

I’m actively looking for PR and news articles for myself and my films, as I’m looking to fulfill the requirements for me to apply for permanent residency in the United States, since I’m an immigrant.

Coming back to “Torn Plaid”, our main purpose for making this film is to address racial discrimination towards brown skinned people. Our hope is to give a voice to minorities who still face discrimination in America, and make a social change.

After the Boston Marathon terrorist bombing in 2013, patriotism and white supremacy grew drastically in America. Our story is a thriller which centers Krishna Sharma, a 23 year old male from India who moves to Los Angeles to pursue his career in art. Krishna meets River and then becomes his best friend during college. After this terrorist attack, River joins a group of Neo-Nazis, and together betray Krishna.

The reason I make films is to tell stories that people are new to and need to hear. I usually bring in a social element to all my stories to add realism to it, so that it’s relatable to the audience as well as being interesting. It should make them want to question themselves, “what if I was in this person’s shoes”?

I hope I can continue making films that can inspire audience and fellow filmmakers, as well as share the knowledge of life, that I possess.
