Julie Delpy to Receive Honorary Dragon Award

The Göteborg Film Festival, Scandinavia’s largest celebration of film and television, will honor French-American actor, writer, and director Julie Delpy with the prestigious Honorary Dragon Award.

The accolade celebrates Delpy’s remarkable contributions to world cinema, highlighting her enduring impact on the industry as a multifaceted artist.

As part of the event, Delpy is set to premiere her latest film, Meet the Barbarians, a poignant exploration of a Syrian family seeking refuge in Northern France. The premiere, scheduled for January 29 at the iconic Cinema Draken, will coincide with the awards ceremony. Following the screening, Delpy will participate in a Q&A session, offering audiences an intimate look into the making of her latest work.

Pia Lundberg, the festival’s artistic director, expressed admiration for Delpy’s artistry:

“Her work blends humor, depth, and sensitivity in a way that resonates with audiences worldwide. She breaks new ground and inspires us. We are very proud to give her this year’s Honorary Dragon Award.”

In addition to the premiere, the festival will host a four-film retrospective showcasing key moments from Delpy’s illustrious career. The selection includes:

  • Three Colours: White (1994), directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, which cemented her place in European cinema.
  • Before Sunrise (1995), Richard Linklater’s romantic classic that propelled Delpy to global stardom, along with its sequels Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013).
  • Two of her directorial ventures, 2 Days in Paris (2007) and Lolo (2015), films that exemplify her unique blend of sharp cultural observations and complex relationship dynamics.

This retrospective not only celebrates her versatility as an actor but also her evolution as a filmmaker with a distinctive voice.

Delpy’s cinematic journey began with standout roles in European art-house classics like Leos Carax’s Bad Blood (1986) and Agnieszka Holland’s Europa Europa (1990). However, her portrayal of Céline in Linklater’s Before trilogy became a defining moment, earning her critical acclaim and global recognition. Beyond acting, Delpy’s directorial works—infused with humor, wit, and insight—have established her as a true auteur.

The 48th Göteborg Film Festival will run from January 24 to February 2, 2025, bringing together filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world. Julie Delpy’s award ceremony on January 29 is poised to be one of the festival’s standout moments, celebrating a career that continues to inspire and captivate.

For those attending, this is a rare opportunity to witness a cinematic icon reflect on her achievements while unveiling her latest creative endeavor.
