Marcel Barrena’s El 47, a historical drama about the bus driver who played a pivotal role in shaping modern Barcelona, and Arantxa Echevarría’s gripping thriller Undercover shared the night’s most coveted prize. El 47 led the nominations going into the ceremony with 16 nods and ultimately secured five awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Salva Reina and Best Supporting Actress for Clara Segura. Undercover‘s Carolina Yuste took home Best Actress for her performance as a police officer infiltrating the ETA terrorist organization.
Eduard Fernández was awarded Best Actor for his powerful turn in Marco, directed by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño. The film tells the real-life story of Enric Marco, a trade unionist who falsely claimed to have survived a concentration camp.
Best Director honors went to Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez for Saturn Return, a film chronicling the rise of iconic Spanish indie rock band Los Planetas. They edged out Spanish cinema titan Pedro Almodóvar, whose English-language debut The Room Next Door—despite earning 13 nominations—won just one award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical, took home the Goya for Best European Film. As a French production, it was only eligible in that category, despite its 13 Oscar nominations this year.
The ceremony was not without controversy. Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender performer nominated for an acting Oscar, was absent following backlash over past social media posts. Amid growing scrutiny, she was removed from the film’s U.S. Oscar campaign.
Meanwhile, Walter Salles’ Brazilian period drama I’m Still Here, which is in the running for three Academy Awards—including Best Picture—claimed the Goya for Best Ibero-American Film.
Hollywood veteran Richard Gere was recognized with this year’s International Goya, while Spanish actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón received the Honorary Goya for her distinguished career.
