Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival Returns with an Exciting Lineup of Films

The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival (SDFF), a program of Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SebArts), is set to take place from March 27–30, 2025, at SebArts and The Rialto Theatre.

An Oscar®-qualifying festival for short-form documentaries, SDFF promises to showcase a powerful selection of films that invite audiences to “engage in what’s real,” while enhancing accessibility and audience interaction.

This year’s festival will present 57 films, carefully chosen from over 700 submissions by a panel of filmmakers and passionate film enthusiasts. The festival will feature films across three categories: Feature Films, Short Films, and Mini Docs (under 10 minutes).

Among the standout films is Big Mama Thornton: I Can’t Be Anyone But Me, which explores the life of Alabama-born blues legend Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, Thornton is renowned for her iconic original recordings of Hound Dog and Ball & Chain. The festival will also showcase the Oscar®-nominated Porcelain War, a poignant documentary about Ukrainian artists Slava, Anya, and Andrey, who choose to stay behind in the midst of war to fight for their homes and their art, finding beauty amid the destruction of their country.

The SDFF continues its tradition of offering an engaging, thought-provoking experience for documentary lovers, with a focus on films that spark meaningful conversations and foster greater understanding of the world around us.

Tickets are available for individual screenings, along with various bundles and festival passes, including full access to all films, discussions, and special events.

“We love films that emerge from the imagination of each filmmaker,” says Jean McGlothlin, Lead Programmer and one of the Founding Festival Directors . “We celebrate experimental storytelling and excellence in craft.” In recent years, social justice, LGBTQ+ and women’s themes have become increasingly central to SDFF’s programming. “We emphasize the importance of individuals telling their stories to move our culture forward,” McGlothlin adds.

SDFF 2025 is shaping up to be an unforgettable celebration of documentary storytelling, offering audiences an immersive experience filled with thought-provoking films, engaging discussions, and a vibrant festival atmosphere.
