Sony and Netflix Revive ‘Ghostbusters’ with an Animated Movie

For nearly 40 years, the Ghostbusters franchise has entertained audiences with live-action films and animated TV series, but it’s now preparing to break new ground. Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are teaming up to bring an animated Ghostbusters movie to life, marking the first time the iconic parapsychologists will enter a whole new dimension in a feature-length animated format.

This project is separate from the Ghostbusters animated series that Sony Animation and Netflix have been developing since 2022. Instead, the upcoming movie looks to expand the franchise in exciting new ways. Following the legacy of live-action sequels Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the upcoming Frozen Empire, the animated film aims to explore fresh horizons for the beloved sci-fi series.

Plot details remain under wraps, but industry insiders have revealed that Kris Pearn, director of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys, has been tapped to helm the project. It’s clear that Sony and Netflix are hoping to bring a revitalized energy to the franchise, akin to the creative success of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Verse films.

With the Spider-Verse franchise and The Mitchells vs. The Machines establishing Sony Animation as a leader in innovative, hybrid animation styles, it’s no surprise that the studio plans to apply the same visual magic to Ghostbusters. The goal? To reinvigorate the supernatural franchise and offer a fresh, bold take on a universe fans hold dear.

Given the critical and commercial challenges facing Frozen Empire, this animated feature could represent a much-needed reset for Ghostbusters. A stylistic shift and a new medium might be just what the franchise needs to capture the imagination of both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.

Grab your proton packs and get ready for a whole new kind of Ghostbusters. If this animated leap can capture even a fraction of the Spider-Verse’s energy, it might just make “bustin’” feel good again. To the Ecto-1, everyone!
