Skylab Documentary Blasts Off to Celebrate 50th AnniversarY

An award-winning filmmaker is competing in a prestigious online competition hosted by a legendary movie studio.

Mark Starks is writer, producer and director of the documentary short, The 50th Anniversary of Skylab: America’s First Space Station. The film celebrates the heroic mission of NASA beginning in 1973 to create a permanent habitat in lower Earth orbit. Three successful Skylab missions would set space endurance records and pave the way for the International Space Station. Actor Paul Ganus is Narrator.

Starks’ film is part of Lift-Off Sessions September 2023, a monthly online showcase for indie shorts and features, hosted by Lift-Off Global Network at Pinewood Studios. 

Pinewood Studios, located in Buckinghamshire, England, has earned its reputation as the largest film studio in the UK. It has been renowned for British cinema’s populist greats: The Doctor series and the Carry On films. Pinewood Studios has also hosted the iconic James Bond, Superman and Star Wars franchises.

Round 1: Global Social Crowd Round – will be live on Vimeo On Demand for two weeks: September 18th – October 2nd. The first round is open to the general public, who rent the collection of films for the festival’s duration. Participants vote for their favorite and second favorite films (voting forms can be found in the ticket email sent to festival participants).  

Round 2: Internal Judges Round – the top five films from each page of the social round will be sent to Lift-Off’s Internal Judges. The panel will go further in-depth and score the films based on multiple creative aspects. The films from each program with the highest overall score win.
