As Boxing Dramas Resurge, This Hard-Hitting Series Refuses to Be Ignored

The gloves are off. With shows like A Thousand Blows reigniting interest in boxing dramas, the genre is back in the spotlight. But while Hollywood polishes its latest spectacles, SPAR is stepping into the ring with something far more raw, real, and necessary.Tackling domestic abuse, mental health struggles, and the brutal fight for survival, SPAR isn’t just about boxing—it’s about fighting for life.Written by Anthony Vander and Kate Napoli, the pilot has already landed a knockout punch, amassing 45,000 views on Link Up TV. The response is clear—audiences are hungry for a story that hits where it really matters.

“THE INDUSTRY IS IN CRISIS”

Anthony Vander, Spar show-runner

With the UK film and TV industry facing massive challenges—fewer commissions, reduced funding, and creatives being forced out—Vander knew he couldn’t sit on the sidelines.“The industry is in crisis—lack of work, fewer commissions, and many creatives having to give up. I knew I’d be waiting forever or it would never get made if I waited for permission to create SPAR. I hope commissioners and execs get behind it. If not, I will find a way to make the series and feature film work. The SPAR brand should be celebrated.”

A BAFTA member and an accomplished filmmaker, Vander has produced two feature films and directed numerous projects. He was recently appointed Festival Director of the new Collective Film Festival London, an initiative aimed at nurturing and inspiring emerging creatives. Speaking to BBC Radio London, Vander emphasized the festival’s mission to support and empower talent in an industry that’s growing increasingly inaccessible.Unlike traditional TV releases, SPAR is hitting the streets first, screening in boxing gyms as part of a grassroots campaign backed by Film Hub London, managed by Film London. This isn’t a passive viewing experience—it’s cinema that demands engagement, action, and change.

Produced by Mavin Rasheed (Professor T, The Power), the series blends cinematic grit with emotional depth, making it essential viewing in today’s fight for meaningful storytelling.
